BUILDING PROJECT COORDINATOR [part-time]

BRIC Arts | Media | Brooklyn is a multi-disciplinary arts and media non-profit, dedicated to presenting visual, performing and media arts programs that are reflective of Brooklyn’s diverse communities and to providing resources and platforms to support the creative process. BRIC’s current programs include, in the performing arts, the Celebrate Brooklyn! Performing Arts Festival and BRICstudio, a rehearsal and performance space; in the visual arts BRIC Rotunda Gallery, a contemporary art gallery, and Brooklyn Community Access Television, Brooklyn’s public access television program.

BRIC is located in the old Strand Theater building in the BAM Cultural District. The building is slated for renovation by the city, and the renovation will include a significant expansion of BRIC’s arts and media facilities, including two new performance spaces, a contemporary art gallery, media screening facilities, and the wiring of all spaces for transmission of programming via BCAT. As a separate project, BRIC is also pursuing an expansion of space for its BCAT operations. The project is currently in the schematic phase of design by Leeser Architecture, with construction scheduled to start in mid-2009. BRIC seeks a part-time project manager for that project.

The responsibilities of the job include, but are not limited to:

  • Facilitate and coordinate internal review of design documents, and prepare analysis of the design based on BRIC’s needs (including programmatic, and efficiency of maintenance and operations).
  • Draft responses to all design submissions.
  • Assist with BRIC’s interface with the city and the design team
  • Attend and prepare records of all meetings with project team, including architect, building co-tenants, and several city government agencies, and maintain all other project files
  • Working with the architect and senior BRIC staff, facilitate development of an FF&E specification and develop related cost estimate
  • Help develop options for the planned expansion of BCAT operations
  • Prepare presentations to the BRIC Board and various internal and external stakeholders

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have at least 5 years of experience in the field of real estate development, architecture, engineering or construction and/or facilities management in the arts
  • Have at least 5 years experience in reviewing and interpreting design documents
  • Be organized, and have excellent writing and oral communication skills

Schedule: this is a part time position, approximately 15-20 hours a week. A regular schedule will be required, but BRIC is flexible about the details of that schedule (2.5 days a week; or 5 half days, for example). The candidate must be available for regular project meetings, currently scheduled for Tuesday afternoons. The hourly rate of pay will be commensurate with experience; please submit your salary requirement as part of your application.

Video Editor

BIT, a division of Brooklyn Community Access Television (BCAT), is looking for an experienced video editor to assist in the creation of our original programming, which covers a wide array of topics: news, neighborhoods, sports, business, health, and arts & culture.

The Organization

Located in the heart of Brooklyn's cultural district in Fort Greene, Brooklyn Community Access Television (BCAT) is Brooklyn's public access cable television program. BCAT is the media program of BRIC Arts|Media|Bklyn (BRIC), a multi-disciplinary cultural organization, dedicated to presenting visual, performing and media arts programs that are reflective of Brooklyn’s diverse communities and to providing resources and platforms to support the creative process.

BCAT provides low cost media education training in all aspects of television production for Brooklyn residents through its Center for Media Education (CME) program; operates three channels of cable television for use by the public to create and present programs of community interest (Brooklyn Free Speech TV); produces programs of interest to Brooklyn residents (Brooklyn Independent Television); and operates a community bulletin board on a fourth cable television channel (Brooklyn Bulletin Board TV). Employees often perform their duties in a mentoring capacity, consistent with BCAT’s role as an educational facility. The community services and programs provided by BCAT make a key contribution to the mission of BRIC Arts|Media|Bklyn.

The Details

The Video Editor reports to the Associate Executive Producer for Programming, and works closely with Senior Producers, Producers and Associate Producers to create Brooklyn-centric programming.

Responsibilities include:
  • Performing video editing functions using both on-line and off-line editing systems. Editing projects include (but may not be limited to) editing of Brooklyn Independent Television programming, preparing event coverage for air, promotions, vignettes, packaging for air, program open and close, and bumpers.
  • Working with and taking direction from producers in the editing of projects including shot selection, b-roll selection, and the creation of stills and graphics.
  • Working independently on varying length projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of two years of non-linear editing experience on television format programs or creative services; will be highly proficient with non-linear editing systems including AVID (DV Xpress; Media Composer) and Apple Final Cut Pro. A familiarity with motion/design graphics software including Adobe After Effects, Photoshop and Media Cleaner is necessary. You must have the ability to work independently, as well as under the direction of producers within strict time constraints and have the flexibility to work varied schedules including nights and weekends. Excellent organization and interpersonal skills are required.

This position is part of the NABET-CWA collective bargaining unit at BCAT. The selected candidate must pay dues to NABET-CWA.

Salary: $30,000

Freelance Master Control Technician:

Job Description: This person is responsible for quality control of four channels; loading programs for playback; creating tape run times; troubleshooting; and maintaining the playback transmission log. Freelancers are responsible for weekend, sick days and vacation coverage. Availability to work flexible hours essential. This is an hourly position: $12/hour.   • Monitoring and adjusting video and audio levels
  • Digitizing promo's and public service announcements for server playback (Seachange)
  • Monitoring and updating (up-next menu) Scala
  • Process all programs for automated playback (Sundance)
  • Transmit live programs when necessary
  • Monitor and update college radio programs.

Job Description: Seeking freelance, on-camera reporters for Brooklyn-based bi-weekly news magazine, Brooklyn Review.

Reporters are responsible for generating story ideas, working with a camera person in the field to execute the story and editing their packages on AVID.

We are looking for reporters with a passion for storytelling, personality and the ability to provide in depth, insightful coverage of the issues facing the borough of Brooklyn. Our style is more NPR than NBC.

Reporters are paid on a per package basis, with packages ranging in length from 3-6 minutes.
